Expert summary
The State of Hawaii is a state in the United States of America. It is on an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of North America, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. It became the fiftieth state of the US on August 21, 1959. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The Hawaiian island chain consists of hundreds of islands spread over nearly 1,500 miles. Most of these islands are volcanic islands. Of them, the eight at the southeast end are the main islands with Hawaii being the largest, giving it the name the ‘Big Isle.’ The archipelago is said to be a part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania, ethnologically and physiographically.
